Understanding Your Social Media Audience: Leads Vs Followers
Hi my dear BIPOC pioneers!
It can feel natural to look at your growing following and assume they’re all potential leads (bonus points if they’re your ideal client). After all, a follow indicates interest, doesn’t it?
But that’s not always the case.
You might have a follower instead.
Understanding the Difference
I like to define leads as individuals who have shown a genuine interest in your services or products. They’re also more likely to invest their time and money into you. These specific groups of people have…
Engaged with your content more frequently than the rest
Responded to your calls to action in the comment sections of your social posts
Given some indication that they might be ready to make a purchase (or at least explore the possibility of it)
Additional signs include DMs requesting more information, email sign-ups for a course you’re offering, or resharing a post they relate to.
Followers, aka your Connections, are a much broader category. While you don’t want to completely disregard this group because they can still advocate for you, they are more likely not to make any purchases.
This group includes:
🎉 Supporters - People who like what you do and want to see you succeed. Friends, family, and supportive internet strangers make up this group of folx
🤝🏽 Current/Future Collaborators - Individuals or businesses who might work with you on a project or recommend you to others. This can often look like partnerships, sponsored posts, and interviews.
👀 Lurkers - Those who consume your content silently and may not actively engage.

The Importance of a Lead Generation System
When you begin to have a better idea of who you should be targeting, the next best step is to build out a lead generation system. Even if you're currently receiving a steady stream of referrals or have a full client roster, having a proactive structure set in place will give you peace of mind and allow for more opportunities.
Here’s why:
Consistent Growth
While referrals and word-of-mouth are fantastic ways to bring in more clients, they can be unpredictable. Think of it as a roller coaster - you may have an influx of clients for several months, then crickets. Having a lead generation system provides a steady flow of potential clients, ensuring you’re never left scrambling when referrals start to dry up.
Scalability
With a lead generation system, you can scale your business more efficiently. Relying solely on referrals limits your growth to the network of your current clients. A robust system expands your reach and opens up new opportunities.
Time Management
Without a system, you might find yourself spending too much time trying to drum up new business when your current stream of customers runs out. A lead generation system allows you to nurture relationships over time, so you have a pipeline of ready leads when you need them. Plus, you’ll save a lot more time.
Let’s go build our liberatory futures together ✌🏽

Ever wonder why some strategies work for others but not for you?
It’s because we are made with different designs.
Think of it like a manual that can tell you how to leverage your strengths, understand your weaknesses, and navigate the business world with ease.
While this seems like it’s too good to be true, this is a very real thing.
